Salem Hills Elementary School and the Atheneum Gifted Magnet Program held a Water Fair this spring as part of their year-end service learning. Before the fair, students learned about the global water crisis through H2O for Life, a nonprofit organization that increases access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene around the world. The Water Fair gave students an opportunity to address the issue through education and fundraising.
The fair included a Water Walk, an educational arcade, and a craft fair. Students learned that almost one billion people around the world make a three-hour journey to gather fresh, clean water every day. The Water Walk simulated the journey to help students understand what students face in areas without immediate access to clean water. Salem Hills and Atheneum students filled jugs with water from a nearby pond and carried them around a course. The experience highlighted the time and effort it takes for students in other places to stay healthy without clean water infrastructure.
Students designed and built their own educational games for the Water Fair arcade. Each carnival-type game included facts about water, the environment, and the importance of having access to clean water. Students also made crafts to sell at the fair. Sales were donated to H2O for Life to help increase access to clean water.
Most recently, donations from Salem Hills and Atheneum have helped H2O for Life install a well at Caracol School in Nicaragua and Tagamenda Primary School in Tanzania. Funds were also used for the Navajo Water Project. The Indigenous-led utility alternative brings clean hot and cold running water to homes in the American Southwest without access to water or sewer lines.
The Water Fair and lessons leading up to it left Salem Hills and Atheneum students with the knowledge and confidence to be agents for positive change. The project developed their awareness of worldwide issues and challenged them to find ways they can help, no matter their age. Great job, students

Salem Hills Elementary School y Atheneum Gifted Magnet Program celebraron una Feria del Agua esta primavera como parte de su aprendizaje de servicio de fin de año. Antes de la feria, los estudiantes aprendieron sobre la crisis mundial del agua a través de H2O for Life, una organización sin fines de lucro que aumenta el acceso al agua potable, el saneamiento y la higiene en todo el mundo. La Feria del Agua brindó a los estudiantes la oportunidad de abordar el tema a través de la educación y la recaudación de fondos.
La feria incluyó un paseo acuático, una sala de juegos educativa y una feria de artesanía. Los estudiantes aprendieron que casi mil millones de personas en todo el mundo hacen un viaje de tres horas todos los días para recolectar agua fresca y limpia. La Caminata por el Agua simuló el viaje para ayudar a los estudiantes a comprender a qué se enfrentan en áreas sin acceso inmediato a agua potable. Los estudiantes de Salem Hills y Atheneum llenaron jarras con agua de un estanque cercano y las llevaron por el campo. La experiencia destacó el tiempo y esfuerzo que les toma a los estudiantes de otros lugares mantenerse saludables sin infraestructura de agua potable.
Los estudiantes diseñaron y construyeron sus propios juegos educativos para la galería Water Fair. Cada juego tipo carnaval incluía datos sobre el agua, el medio ambiente y la importancia de tener acceso a agua potable. Los estudiantes también hicieron artesanías para vender en la feria. Las ventas se donaron a H2O for Life para ayudar a aumentar el acceso al agua potable.
Más recientemente, las donaciones de Salem Hills y Atheneum han ayudado a H2O for Life a instalar un pozo en la escuela Caracol en Nicaragua y la escuela primaria Tagamenda en Tanzania. La alternativa de servicios públicos liderada por indígenas lleva agua corriente fría y caliente a hogares en el suroeste de Estados Unidos sin acceso a agua o alcantarillado.
