Simley High School senior Abi Lindquist has been selected as a 2024 Athena Athlete of the Year! Simley head coaches chose Abi for her work as a role model as much as her outstanding athletic accomplishments.
“Abi has grown tremendously from being a shy kid in 7th grade to learning to push herself to her limits,” Simley Cross Country Head Coach Dan Gerber said. “She is one of the top five athletes I have ever coached at Simley regarding work ethic, growth, being a great teammate, and leadership.”
Abi is a 5-year member and 1-year captain of the Simley Cross Country Team. In 2019, she earned Most Improved, and in both 2022 and 2023, she earned Academic All State. She has earned All Section, All Conference, and an All Conference Honorable Mention each twice and has been a state meet qualifier twice as well. She holds the school record as the second fastest 5K runner, and in the last four seasons, she was the team’s No. 2 runner in all but four Varsity races!
Always looking for a new challenge, Abi spent the 2021-2022 season with the Simley Swim and Dive Team as well. In a single year, she was a Sections qualifier in the 100 Breaststroke and a Top 16 finisher in Diving. In addition to lettering, she earned Rookie of the Year.
Abi has dedicated herself to Nordic Skiing for six years, earning her spot as captain for two. She is a six-time letter winner who has earned an All Conference Honorable Mention once, All Conference three times, and Nordic Academic All State six times! She is a four-time MVP, and she won every Metro East Conference race held during her senior season.
“Abi is a constant competitor. She has developed into an athlete who has the endurance of a distance runner and the explosive power needed to be a skier,” Simley Nordic Ski Head Coach Heath Anderson said. “ Abi leads by example and is an excellent role model on and off the snow.”
With her notable endurance and power on the Nordic Ski Team, it’s no wonder that Abi is the Simley Track and Field Team’s senior distance captain this spring. She is a five-year participant and four-year letter winner on the team. In 2021, Abi earned an All Conference Honorable Mention in the 4x800 Relay. By 2023, she earned All Section in the 4x800 Relay and the 3200 in addition to earning Academic All State.
“Abi is a great example for younger runners,” Simley Girls Track and Field Head Coach Gertchen Schwanz said. “She works hard every day and pushes herself to break records.”
Abi is currently ranked 8th in school history in the 1600 and 5th in the 3200, and Coach Schwanz is confident Abi won’t stop there. She predicts that Abi will break the school record in the 3200, be Top 10 in the 800 and Top 3 in the 1600, and qualify for the State Track Meet.
Congratulations to Abi on her outstanding high school athletics career that earned her the Athena Award, and good luck to her as she embarks on her senior Track and Field season!

“Abi es un competidor constante.
