ISD 199 Winter One Acts

Simley Theatre presents The Winter One Acts. This event will showcase students at Inver Grove Heights Middle School and Simley High School who volunteer as cast and crew in four short plays:

  • “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell, directed by Simley teacher Sarah Olson: Written during the first wave feminist movement, the play contrasts how women act in public and in private as well as how they perform in front of other women versus how they perform in front of men.

  • “Smiling Cat, Candy Heart” by Jennie Webb, directed by senior Ahnalee Ambriz: A short play about the big battles in the world and the little things we do to try to safely navigate through them.

  • “Radium Girls” by D. W. Gregory, directed by juniors Abbie Tabor and Rachel Ernst: In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease.

  • “Say Nothing” by C. R. Wright, directed by junior Spencer Hagel: Class President Emily delivers a touching eulogy to the student body after the recent suicide of classmate Elliot. But when her speech is over, she is approached by Elliot's best friend, who accuses her of standing idly by while Elliot was bullied for being gay. Emily is forced to confront her own hypocrisy and her small, but meaningful, role in his death.

“People should check out the One Acts this year to see the hard work all our students have put in to tell powerful stories. Our student directors chose their own shows by finding plays that resonated with them and included messages they wanted to share,” Sarah Olson said. “I'm loving working with the students in theatre. They are very independent and get their work done without much instruction, which makes my job a lot easier! They are also very open to sharing their ideas and collaborating so we can create something together that we are all proud of.”
