  •  The Simley Boys Golf Team opened with its traditional event at the Troy Burne Hudson Invitational on Monday, April 8th. This event has about a 50% chance each year of being canceled due to any combination of snow, rain, and the late opening of the golf course due to cold. The forecast this season was seemingly tolerable until the winds kicked up early in the round turning the conditions frigid and sending the scores somewhere towards the solar eclipse on the challenging links of Troy Burne. The Spartans were represented well by Seniors Justin Orn, Jake Stanton, and Carson Gustafson; Juniors Elias Boone and Myles Stanton, and the silky swinging Sophomore Charley Martin. All the golfers hit the ball well, especially for this early in the season, but the combination of challenging hump-backed greens and strokes that at times looked like the players were wearing the solar eclipse dark glasses the coach foolishly handed out on a cloudy day made the scorecards not as pretty as they could have been. Finishing in the middle of the 20-team pack which included some very strong teams from both Minnesota and Wisconsin was an acceptable result, but every player agreed they left strokes on the course.  The highlighted best shots from each player included: Justin Orn's recovery shot from the heavy fescue on the toughest hole on the course to 7 feet from the pin; Carson Gustafson's dart on his last hole of the day on a long downhill par-3 followed by the putt drained for birdie; Eli Boone's sand save out of a plugged lie to kick in range; Myles Feldman's putt on the second hardest hole on the course ? a slippery downhill left to righter to card a great par; Charlie Martin's textbook play on the heavily trapped 7th hole featuring a fairway splitting drive, a pin seeking 9-iron that he almost jarred to an icy 4-footer to finish the birdie. But the team shot of the day was Jake Stanton's blistering second shot on the 550-yard par-5 first hole to 14 feet. Jake's eagle tantalizingly lipped out but tap in birdies always delight. The first round of the season showed the prodigious potential of the 2024 iteration of Simley Boys Golf.
