Simley Announcements 10-13-23

  • The Simley Girls Volleyball team returned to its winning ways spoiling Hastings Senior Night by defeating the Raiders in four sets: 25-17, 25-23, 17-23, and 25-19. The Spartans dominated the net in the first set with Junior Glissa Gorter recording six kills out of the setting position, relatively unheard of in volleyball. Glissa also had three blocks on the night. The second set saw everything break Hastings way as they led throughout the set and seemed headed to tie the match up easily, but they hadn’t counted on Senior Middle Hitter Gwynn Gorter’s five kills and two blocks, all near the end of the set to lead a furious Spartan comeback to quiet the fans and Raider players alike. The Simley volleyball players may have thought the match was over after that great comeback, but the Hastings seniors were not going down without a fight and cruised to a comfortable win in set 3. The visiting Spartans trailed much of the fourth set as they could not get a lead although they answered every time the Raiders sided out and in gritty fashion finally pulled ahead 17-16 and just like a thoroughbred champion at Churchill downs seeing the finish line found another gear and scored seven points in a row to seal the deal. Highlights included Senior Libero Makayla Goldschmitz serve receiving at an incredible 2.50 pace in a tough gym to track the ball and Senior defensive specialists Semira Van Leer and Sofia DeLao serving the cover off the ball. It was a great team win.
