The team portion of the Simley Boys Golf Season came to an end on Friday, June 2nd at Bunker Hills Golf Course. The Spartans fought hard to qualify for the second round of squad play, but the course was too tough, the bounces were unlucky, the balls were afraid of the dark, and even the coach’s blueberry and chocolate chip pancakes were not enough to pull it out. The pride was evident on every hole, however, as the players ground hard on every shot and acquitted themselves very well. It was the last loop of their high school golfing careers by Seniors Carl Lane, Caden Renslow, and Joey Stanton. They each end a six-year run having earned the complete respect of their teammates and coaches. Carl’s dedication, Caden’s leadership, and Joey’s steadfastness will be missed, but will continue to inspire the returning players. Sophomore Elias Boone showed he will be a force to be reckoned with and Freshman Charlie Martin had the second-best score of the day featuring birdies on the tricky fourth and challenging 16th holes. But for Simley Golf, the two-day sections belonged to Junior Justin Orn. You can’t win a tournament on the first day, but you can lose it. Justin opened with a solid 77, but the fireworks came in the final round when he needed something special – and special it was. Justin carded five birdies and an eagle to shoot two-under par and capture 3rd place on Monday. When an evergreen tree on the 16th hole threatened to ruin the storybook ending, Justin simply punched his Triple Track Callaway back to the fairway, limited the damage to a bogey, and moved to the 17th hole, a 215 par-3 of terror with water and sand lurking everywhere. Justin responded with a dart to five feet below the hole and buried the birdie putt. Ten minutes and two putts later, Stone Cold Justin Orn had punched his ticket to the State Tournament.
