"Grandma Club Movie Day Thursday, June 1, starting at 3:30 in Ms. Coryell's room. Come celebrate the last meeting of the year with a movie and friends!" The Simley Boys Golf team wrapped up the 2023 Metro East Conference on Wednesday at the Gold Course at Emerald Greens with a solid performance, a solid score, some fireworks, and emotions that ran the gamut. At the end of the day, the Spartans recorded a season tying low score of 304, averaging 76 strokes a player – a score you’ll take any day of the week and twice on Sunday. But nobody was happy in the moment as three other teams shot their best scores of the season to relegate Simley to a fourth-place finish in the final standings leaving them one spot short of their mid-season goal by a single point. Their coaches were impressed by the effort and individual results in the Metro East Final as five players posted scores in the 70’s, but like the championship athletes they are, the linksters weren’t happy with a moral victory. Delightful stories abounded, however, and in a few days the Spartans will appreciate what unfolded. Highlights included Junior Justin Orn wrapping up 3rd place in the individual conference standings with four birdies and earning All-Conference honors. Senior Joey Stanton recorded three birdies including two 2’s to also earn All-Conference honors. Sophomore Elias Boone carded a round that included nine pars in a row to again demonstrate the improving consistency that has marked Eli’s season. Shout out to Freshman Charlie Martin who opened the tournament with a birdie and a smooth 37 on the front nine and finished with three pars. Senior Caden Renslow refused to let his round get away from him birdieing the last two holes to also finish in the 70’s. Senior Carl Lane had a little too long a ride on the bogey train in the middle of his round, but also came through on the final few holes to salvage his score. The Spartans look to take their high level of play into sectional play next week. Congratulations on a fine conference season.
