Concluding a brutal four match road stretch against highly ranked Metro East teams, the Simley Girls Volleyball team rolled into Two Rivers on Tuesday, October 11th, to compete for “The Shield.” Rather than play out the road string in desultory fashion, the Spartans simply played their best volleyball of the season defeating the Warriors in four sets. Simley was unstoppable in sets one and three winning 25-16 and 25-15, and almost swept the match before Two Rivers made two great plays at the end of set two to eke out a 25-23 win. Set four was a nail-biter as the Warriors fought off three match points before the Spartans prevailed 28-26 in overtime. The defense, passing, and blocking were solid, but this night the offense shone highlighted by the Gorter Girls, Gwynn and Glissa, contributing 7 kills in only 10 attempts, Anesya McElmury hitting .643 with 9 kills, and Naomi Romslo simply putting 20 kills on the board. All eleven players contributed mightily to the victory over the Warriors resulting in Simley holding all three traveling trophies in 2022 – The Shovel, The Bus, and The Shield.
