Simley Boys Golf had something to prove as the Metro East Mid-Conference Tourney rolled around. After a good start to the season, it was time to see if the Spartans linksters were contenders or pretenders. With all the conference schools represented at Oak Glen Golf Course on Tuesday, April 30th, on a day where the wind and the temperature were howling cold and all that was missing was snow, the Spartans bundled up, hunkered down, and conquered the challenging conditions with a team score of 321 which was good enough for a high third place finish. At Oak Glen, Senior Captain Ben Borchard returned to his low shooting ways and led the team along with Freshman Josh Painter firing matching 79s featuring good shot after good shot. Sophomore Zach Painter and Juniors Alex Guggisberg and Charlie Gustafson would have matched those scores except for a few wayward drives and uncooperative putts. Junior Zach Sayner rounded out the scoring for the Spartans. Be assured the flashes shown by the Simley golfers were not flashes in the pan, but signs of great things to come this season.

McCauley Leads Girls Golf Team to Victory

The Spartan girls golf team hosted South Saint Paul and Henry Sibley at Inver Wood on Wednesday. The modified best ball format made for a very fun day despite the cold and cloudy conditions. The 18-hole match put the strength and depth of the Spartan team on display. Senior Molly Illetschko, and Juniors Jordan Juers and Anna Ahern all played similar rounds. Slow starts in the cold morning followed up by strong finishes on the back nine. Juers played the last four holes mistake free to finish strong. Ahern avoided any big numbers on the back nine with very consistent play, and Illetschko played a great final nine that was 10 strokes better than her opening 9-holes. Senior Rachael Wolfe used her experience to overcome a few tough breaks and keep her head in the game, ultimately ending the day with the fourth best score in the tournament. Seventh grader Reese McCauley shot an even-par 36 on the back nine to end the day in second place. Reese had birdies on the 14th and 17th holes on her way to a great 79. Freshman Isabella McCauley Had the low round of the tournament as she led her team to victory. 3 birdies on the first 5 holes of the inward nine, and a great par save on the difficult 15th hole was the key to Isabella’s two-under round of 70. The Spartans return to conference action tomorrow when all eight conference teams compete in a nine-hole match at Keller Golf Club.
