Honor Flight

Atheneum Students Aid Honor Flight

Students with their cards of appreciationHonor Flights give military veterans an opportunity to visit war memorials in Washington, D.C., at no cost to the veteran. Reuben Shalander, the great-grandfather of an Atheneum Gifted Magnet Program third-grader, took an honor flight this November. He served as a combat soldier in the Army during World War II and was taken to see the war memorial with about 80 other veterans.

Part of the visit included a mail call, similar to the ones that soldiers experienced during service. Mrs. Ursin’s third-grade class, which includes Mr. Shalander’s great-grandchild, made sure he had lots of mail during the mail call. They wrote cards to Mr. Shalander, thanking him for his service.
