Inver Grove Heights Schools (ISD 199) faces some tough decisions following the November 7 ballot, in which both its operating levy questions failed. In the school board election, voters elected five total candidates.
199 Future Ready Referendum
Question 1 failed with 53% (1,878 votes) no and 47% (1,650 votes) yes, according to the
Minnesota Secretary of State website. The operating levy would have generated an additional $410 per student in annual revenue to be used to fund K-8 world language, add courses to help students explore career opportunities, and maintain class sizes.
Question 2 failed with 54% (1,901 votes) no and 46% (1,618 votes) yes, according to the
Minnesota Secretary of State website. The second operating levy would have generated an additional $110 per student to be used to provide important safety and mental health supports as well as provide instructional support for teachers.
“First, we thank all voters for seeking information and making an informed decision,” ISD 199 Superintendent Dave Bernhardson said. “We are disappointed that we were unable to unify the community behind the needs of our students with regard to the referendum questions.”
What These Results Mean
Without the passing of either operating levy question, ISD 199 will face financial challenges. “The 199 Future Ready initiative, which was developed in collaboration with the community to give our kids an advantage when they leave school, will not be implemented,” ISD 199 School Board Chair Matt Schafer said. “Without these increases in revenue, we may have to reduce staff, increase class sizes, and reduce programming.”
Common Ground: Our Children’s Future
School Board Chair Schaefer believes that now that the election is over, a new chapter in the future for students can begin. “Despite this disappointing news, we believe there is common ground in supporting the needs of our children,” he said. “We will build on that common ground to ensure that we all move forward together in the spirit of ISD 199’s mission: Inspire. Innovate. Excel. A community commitment.”
Next Steps
District leaders and ISD 199 School Board members will begin evaluating district needs. The school district will provide updates to the community throughout the process.
School Board Election
On November 7, Inver Grove Heights Schools voters cast their ballots to fill four four-year seats and one two-year seat on the ISD 199 School Board. Incumbents Jake Klingner, Darcie Pierson, and Sherry Warrick were elected to the four-year seats alongside new School Board Member Liz Niemioja. New School Board Member Shana Dukes was elected to the two-year seat.
