Nick Pate with his Pan American Games gold medalSimley High School Class of 2013 and Inver Grove Heights Schools alumnus, Nick Pate, is a two-time member of Team USA’s bowling team. This year, he made his way to the 2019 Pan American Games, which hosts 6,700 athletes from 39 sports internationally. Bowlers from 16 countries competed in Peru, and Nick won a doubles silver medal with team member Jakob Butturff and a singles gold medal.

The road to the gold medal was especially unpredictable as Nick scored some of the lowest and highest scores during qualifiers. He entered the field of 32 competitors in the bottom 10 but rocketed to the top four with a 268 game and a perfect 300 game. Nick was one of only five athletes to score a perfect game during the Games.

"I didn't bowl well the first day, and things just weren't going my way, but I fought tough, mentally," he told the United States Bowling Congress during an interview. He highlighted the breathing exercises he used to clear his mind.

Nick won 190-189 against Brazil’s defending champion, Marcelo Suartz.

"To watch what happened to Marcelo was mindboggling because he's such a great bowler,” he said. “I was fortunate this time that it went my way, and I'm ecstatic. It's something that will always have my name next to it, and I'm looking forward to celebrating with my friends and family."
