Pine Bend students race electronic pigThis fall, Pine Bend Elementary School collected donations for a local food shelf, Neighbors, Inc. The non-profit social services organization offers emergency and supportive services to northern Dakota County residents. Students gathered 2,289 pounds of donated food for Neighbors, Inc., a school record. The annual donation drive not only helps stock the local pantry for winter, it also leads into a Pine Bend tradition: the school’s annual Pig Races.

After helping Neighbors, Inc. staff load food into their vans for the food shelf, classes received an electronic pig for every 100 items they collected for donation. The electronic toys were then entered into the school’s annual Little Pig Race or Big Pig Race for a chance to win a pizza party or ice cream party for the class. Students gathered in the gym to cheer on their class’s toy in each race. The first toy to race across a table and fall off the other side won, earning their class a pizza party in the Little Pig Race and an ice cream party in the Big Pig Race. Great job to all of the students who donated food to help their neighbors, and congratulations to Little Pig Race winner, Ms. Landis’s class, and Big Pig Race winner, Ms. Gagne’s class.
