ISD 199 alumnus Tommy Platek with his colleagues and fellow nominees from Town Square TelevisionThe Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences holds the Regional Emmy® Awards each year to honor exceptional work in television. This year, Inver Grove Heights Schools alumnus and Simley High School Class of 2008 alumnus Tommy Platek won a Regional Emmy® Award in the Photographer: News category. Mr. Platek is a videographer for Town Square Television, and his award entry featured samples of his videography work on the local News Magazine Insight 7.

Town Square Television is a non-profit corporation that provides local access channels for Inver Grove Heights, Lilydale, Mendota, Mendota Heights, South St. Paul, Sunfish Lake, and West St. Paul. Mr. Platek applauded community television for its important place in the media spectrum.

“I was so honored and thankful to receive this award,” he said. “Being recognized among the talent in this market shows the relevance and effectiveness that community media can have in our community.”

Other nominees in the Photographer: News category included news photographers from Minnesota’s Twin Cities Fox affiliate KMSP-TV and NBC affiliate KARE-TV as well as the ABC affiliate KSFY-TV, which covers South Dakota, Southwest Minnesota, and Northwest Iowa. While Mr. Platek won Upper Midwest Emmy® Awards in 2017 and 2018 for individual video entries, the Photographer: News category considers a nominee’s entire body of work over the past year. The fact that Mr. Platek won in this category is especially notable as his position is multi-faceted. In addition to videography, he produces and edits pieces, teaches classes, and facilitates volunteers.

“We could not be prouder of Tommy,” Town Square Television Executive Director Jodie Miller said. “Working at our small but mighty non-profit media station requires our team to juggle many responsibilities along with honing their shooting, editing, and reporting skills, and they are recognized among a very large field of elite nominees and recipients in this region.”

Congratulations to Mr. Platek on what Insight 7 Producer and fellow Regional Emmy® Award nominee Dennis Rafferty called a “lifetime goal” for news photographers.
